Java. British Administration gold 1/2 Rupee (Mohur) AH 1231 (1816) MS64 Prooflike NGC, Jakarta mint, British United East India Company issue, KM248a, Scholten-591d, Fr-15. Obv. Three-line legend, in Javanese, with date above and Z below. Rev. Legend in Arabic. Outstanding, an exceptionally rare issue with only a handful known of which this is the joint highest certified, and the only one to have received the 'prooflike' designation. Both of these factors are incredible when one factors in the habitually crude production of this type. Alluring reflective fields to both sides capture the eye, sharp devices cloaked with a light russet tone. Minor adjustment marks reside in the fields but are markedly less prominent than usual and fade into insignificance where the eye appeal is concerned. We handled a similar example in June 2016, graded MS64 but with no prooflike designation, and that specimen realized $10,000 hammer; three years on and with an even loftier certification, this piece must surely attract even greater bidder attention.
