Java. Dutch East India Company gold Rupee 1797 MS64 NGC, Jakarta mint, KM178 (incorrectly listed as 1/2 Rupee in KM), Scholten-443, Fr-11. Obv. Two-line Arabic legend with date below. Rev. Three-line Arabic legend. The finest known of this extremely rare type; the next highest certified are two AU58s. Immensely well struck for this crude issue, with full silky luster and a peach tone to the deep gold planchet. This example hails from a collection which focused on the finest possible of even the rarest issues, and so it is safe to say that to upgrade on this piece would be near impossible. An absolutely sublime specimen and a once in a lifetime offering.
