Nicholas I gold Award Medal "For Usefulness" 1826 MS62 NGC, Diakov-450.3 var. with slightly different portrait (R4), Smirnov-419/c. 41mm. 34.07gm. By V. Alexeev. Obv. Portrait of Nicholas I right with full engravers name on the truncation of the bust. Rev. Circular inscription (For Usefulness) in cyrillic within a patterned circle. Diakov states, "Instituted in 1801. Awarded to merchanys, meschyanins (members of the middle class) and peasants for generous donations and services to the government." Very high relief, with bold details throughout. The surfaces display bright golden mint luster with minor hairlines and a few small contact marks. The first gold example of this medal that we have seen and we can find no other gold striking having been sold, or offered.
