Philip V gold 8 Escudos 1704 S-P MS64★ NGC, Seville mint, KM260, Fr-247. "8 P 8 S" type. The single highest graded specimen of this variety by either NGC or PCGS, and bearing the coveted 'star' designation indicating exceptional eye appeal. It is not difficult to see why it has received this lofty designation - the strike is fantastic, the dies perhaps slightly worn but the overall detail sharp and well-defined. Production has left this 8 Escudos with an abundance of frosty luster, which has survived the 300+ years since its striking and still coats the thick gold planchet today. A type rarely encountered in Mint State let alone this near-gem level; the last we handled was in April 2018, where an MS63 sold at our Chicago sale for $10,800, and this MS64★ treasure will surely elicit even stronger bidding.
