Ancients
SELEUCID KINGDOM. Antiochus III the Great (222-187 BC). AR tetradrachm (29mm, 16.85 gm, 12h). NGC Choice AU 5/5 - 3/5, scratches. Uncertain Mint. Diademed head of Antiochus III right, somewhat idealized with assertive nose, tightly manicured hair but receding hairline, break in bangs, both diadem ties falling neatly, bead-and-reel border / BAΣIΛEΩΣ / ANTI-OXOY, Apollo seated left on omphalus, testing arrow in right hand, left hand on grounded bow right behind with curved tips and grip marked by two pellets. cf. SC 1040 for similar portrait. A simply stunning coin in hand. High relief portrait, strongly struck on ample flan with mirror-like surfaces.
This specimen does not appear to precisely match any mint in Seleucid Coins. The portrait is exceptionally fine with the hair is expertly coiffured. The style is reminiscent of the ΔΙ mint but cut by a master die engraver who was normally tasked with creating gold dies.
