PARTHIAN KINGDOM. Orodes II (ca. 57-38 BC). AR tetradrachm (30mm, 15.10 gm, 11h). NGC VF 4/5 - 3/5. Seleuceia on the Tigris, dated Daisos (May), 40/39 BC. Sellwood 48.4 (no year date).
This coin has the Aramaic letter 'M' between the two legs of the throne. It is as of yet unclear what this letter signifies, but could be the abbreviation of the Aramaic MALKA (King). It was minted in 40/39 BC after a short-lived Parthian victory in Syria. Professor Bono Simonetta, discusses a similar tetradrachm in: "On Some Tetradrachms of Orodes II and the Probable Issues of Pacorus I", Numismatic Chronicle (1978), 7ff. Dr. Farhad Assar, noted Parthian academic, comments only 3-4 examples of this variety is known, thus a true rarity.
