SASANIAN KINGDOM. Kavad II (AD 628). AR drachm (32mm, 4.08 gm, 3h). MS. Mint YZ (Yazd), Regnal Year 2 (AD 628). Crowned bust of Kavad II right, crescent over right shoulder and fillet at each shoulder, 'peroz' (victorious) to left of bust / Fire altar between attendants; star to left and crescent to right of flames. Kavad (also known as Shiroe), the son of Khusrau II, had all his brothers and half brothers murdered to ensure he had no rivals to the throne. He reigned for only a few months and all his coins are dated year 2 even though his first year must have lasted for nearly four months. Kavad started peace negotiations with the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius (AD 610-641) ending the long and ultimately disastrous war started by Khusrau II. As a result of the peace the True Cross, which had been captured by the Sasanians, was returned to Jerusalem.
