Kings of All England. Edward the Confessor (1042-1066) Penny ND (1048-1050) Choice AU (flan cracks), London mint, Aelfw... as moneyer, Small Flan type, 0.70gm, 14mm, S-1175, N-818. +EDǷH • | RD E, diademed, cuirassed bust of Edward left / +ÆLFǷ ON LIINDE, voided short cross. A beautiful, darkened steel-gray representative of this small penny, stunningly fully struck in crisp fashion for the poor alloy of the flan--the strike exhibiting perfect centering and a full beaded border. The rendering of the moneyer's name leaves its exact reading in doubt, as the moneyers Aelfward, Aelfwig, Aelfwine, and Aelfwold all struck coins at London during this period. The few noted flan cracks appear only surface deep, and the over integrity of the coin quite sturdy.
