Victoria Gothic Florin 1881 MS63 Prooflike NGC, KM746.4, S-3900. Reeded edge. An incredibly intriguing piece, not least because of the extremely unusual assigned grade, presently the only representative of the year certified as prooflike by NGC, with the 1881 an already very rare year to encounter in proof grades. The possibility that this specimen may indeed be a proof is heightened of supremely reflective, mirror-like fields, and a frosty sheen over the queen's bust and within the shields on the reverse, producing an enviably cameo contrast in stark opposition to the usual brushed silver finish of standard strikings. Die polish lines further fill all open space on the flan, with only a couple, quickly dismissable contact marks. As a point of comparison, we sold a fully proof striking for $5405 in our 2017 Chicago Auction #3054 (Lot 30858), and are very excited to see what heights this perhaps even rarer prooflike example may achieve.
