Livonia and Estonia
Livonia. Riga Counterstamped Siege 5 Ore ND (1705) XF Details (Rim Filing) NGC, KM85, Ahlstrom-114. Displaying round interlocked C's with XII in between counterstamp (UNC Standard) on a Carl XII 5 Ore 1700 of Sweden (cf. KM310). An extremely rare emission ordered in December by Governor-general Carl Gustav Frolich during the 1705 siege, this small issue displays remarkable detail and preservation both for the host, considering the usual weakness of 18th-century Swedish coinage, as well as the added stamp. Likely among the finest surviving examples, with another piece certified VF25 achieving $1527 in our 2014 Sale of the Eric P. Newman Collection (Auction #3029, Lot 31898).
