CANADA-NEWFOUNDLAND. Union Bank of Newfoundland. 5 Pounds, 1883. CH-750-12-08. Very Fine. Damaged.
Saint Johns. This note is the first of four of highly scarce Union Bank of Newfoundland 5 Pound issued examples we are offering. Extremely Rare does not suffice when describing the rarity of this piece, and the subsequent three examples to follow this lot. All four of these pieces hail from the AB series of the 1883 plate dated series which saw a limited run from Serial Number 11001 to 13000. Of the two thousand pieces created, our research indicates that this may be the first time any have come up for US auction. The notes were printed as uniface by the American Bank Note Company. Originally the 1865-1881 examples of this variety were hand-dated leaving us unsure of the print run. However, the 5 Pound plate note was altered in 1883 with the signatures and full date plated onto the notes. This particular example is seen with just some edge wear, and some staining mentioned for accuracy. Very Fine.
