GERMAN EAST AFRICA. Deutsch-Ostafrikanische Bank. 500 Rupien, 1912. P-5. PMG Very Fine 30 Net. Rust, Ink.
A key piece to collecting German East Africa and a one that seldom is available publicly. These 500 Rupien notes are very rare and being from a popular series makes the rarity seem even higher. This was the highest denomination for the issue and differs from the lesser denominations at the portrait where it is left facing rather than right. Auction appearances are seldom and the most recent we are aware of was an About Uncirculated note which brought $36,000 in an August 2018 public sale. The present note shows the initial appeal and detail of a higher grade with still bold color and sharp design features. Some clip rust at the upper left and ink at top right are the only major limiting factors in grade. Certainly a hole in even advanced collections and an offering that will garner remarkable interest from collectors. PMG Very Fine 30 Net. Rust, Ink.
