50 mm; 85 gms. By Brenet. Issued by the "Societe De Geographie" and awarded to Englishman (Benjamin) Leigh Smith for his exploration of the Arctic in 1871-73. Britannia seated facing left presenting wreaths with right arm extended, altar to right; Reverse: Inscription: "A / Mr LEIGH SMITH / EXPLORATIONS / DANS L'OCEAN ARCTIQUE / 1871-1873 / 1880" within central medallion surrounded by wreath and legend: "SOCIETE DE GEOGRAPHIE / PRIX FONDE PAR A. DE LA ROCHETTE." Sharply struck with incredible definition of the fine details. The flashy prooflike surfaces contrast nicely to the frosted devices. A beautiful medal with an arctic exploration theme. UNIQUE.
