FRANCE. 5 Franc, 1889-A. Paris Mint. NGC PROOF-64 ULTRA CAMEO.
Fr-595; KM-829; Gad-1003. An impressive and historic presentation issue, likely struck at the Exposition Universelle held in Paris from May 6th to October 31th which showcased exhibitors from over 35 countries and attracted a staggering 32 million visitors. Coinciding with the 100th Anniversary of the storming of the Bastille and the symbolic beginning of the French Revolution, this type displays the unique addition of a "C" below the denomination, an indication of its striking for the "centenaire". As one might expect from a presentation issue, the surfaces show significant refinement over those intended for circulation, with fine vertical die polish in the fields that produces uniform reflectivity over both sides and contrasting frost that adorns the raised surfaces. Fully original, this example shows no evidence of having been previously dipped, with delicate "frosty" tone along the outer legends as well as a small blush of reddish-copper color near the fasces at seven o'clock on the obverse. Little handling is visible to the unaided eye, however magnified inspection reveals a few minor instances of soft handling which determine the grade. A truly amazing opportunity for the collector of French gold when all is considered!

Estimate: $11000.00- $14000.00
