GERMANY. Blood Order, Instituted 1934. EXTREMELY FINE.
40.2 mm; 22.9 gms. Barac-269; Werlich-451; Forman-194a (and b); Husken-72.01a. Design by Josef Fuess. Eagle facing right on victor's wreath enclosing date "9 / NOV.", right field inscribed "MUNCHEN / 1923- / 1933"; Reverse: Radiant swastika above sharply detailed facade of the Feldherrnhalle, legend: "UND JHR HABT DUCH GESIEGT". In exergue, serial number: "1029 / 990 / and tiny signature J. FUESS MUNCHEN". This is an example of the original issue that was awarded to 1500 participants in Hitler's unsuccessful Munich putsch who had been members of the Nazi party or one of its formations before January 1932 (continuous service), or had been cadets from the Munich Infantry School who marched in support of General Ludendorff. Later this award was extended to other individuals who demonstrated early support for the Nazi party. These later issues are distinguished from the original issue by their higher serial numbers (above 1500), lower fineness (.800 silver), and by the lack of the designer's signature. The maroon case measures 92.7 x 60.9 x 22.3 mm with interior lined in white satin, the medal resting on cream velvet. Outer lid is gold-stamped "8./9. November / 1923". The bottom of the case bears a small postage stamp-like label repeating the serial number of the medal. Case shows signs of normal use, with the inner cloth hinge frayed. A RARE medal made even scarcer by the case and matching serial number.

From the Collection of Dr. James Eustace Bizzell, II.
