GERMANY. Prussia. Taler, ND (1751). Cleve Mint. Friedrich II the Great (1740-86). NGC MS-64.
Dav-2591; v.Schr-1651; Old-368. A RARE and highly coveted issue, briefly struck for the Royal Prussian Asiatic Society, a trading company based in Emden, and showcasing an exquisitely engraved reverse, the central arms being supported by the iconic German wild man on the left with a Chinese man in elaborate clothing on the right. Close inspection of the surfaces confirms the outstanding overall quality, with golden toning accents and virtually no signs of past handling in the satiny field. While very minor, a trace of striking softness is all that likely precluded Gem certification.
