GERMANY. Solms-Laubach. Taler, 1768-WWE. Christian August (1738-84). PCGS MS-63 Gold Shield.
KM-32; Dav-2784. Obverse: View of salt mines. Reverse: Ornate shield with lion walking right, head turned toward shield. An immensely desirable one year issue, highly sought not only due to its ornately engraved designs, but also for its noteworthy elusiveness on the market. This example, charmingly preserved, displays a mixture of pale gray and gold tone on both sides with pinpoint design detail and Superb glossy fields. A few ticks from handling appear here and there and ultimately help determine the grade, but their visual presence is so minor that the eye appeal suggests a finer grade. Worthy of a close look, as this Taler will surely give immense pleasure to its next owner.

Located about 14 miles east-southeast of Giessen, this line first appeared in 1561 when the previously formed Solms-Lichand-Hohensolms split into Solms-Laubach and Solms-Rodelheim. By 1676 however, Solms-Laubach had died out, and the titles passed to Solms-Wildenfels. Some 20 plus years later however, the line was resurrected in 1696, and the coining of a number of types, all rare today, occurred from 1738 to 1770. By 1806, the line was mediatized under the pressure of Napoleon's France and control fell under that of Grand Duchy of Hesse (formerly Hesse-Darmstadt).

Estimate: $4000.00- $6000.00
