GERMANY. Wurzburg. Johann Philipp Franz von Schonborn Silver Medal, 1720. NGC AU Details--Cleaned.
73.2 mm. Helmschrott-544a. By Vestner. Issued to commemorate the election of von Schonborn (1673-1724) as Prince-Bishop of Wurzburg on September 18, 1719. Dated 1720 as a chronogram in the reverse legend, the date incorrectly interpreted as 1730 by NGC. Bust right in flowing wig and Bishop's ornate ryasa, legend around; Reverse: legend: "EN HIS SVB TRINIS VMBRIS CONCREDITA SERVAT" above a tree festooned with religious and political icons, which is being guarded by a crowned lion. Marienberg Castle in Wurzburg on hill in distance. In exergue: "NAT: 15. FEBR: 1673 / ELECT. 18. SEPT. / 1719." Typical contact marks in the fields, which are bright silver from an old cleaning which is now beginning to re-tone.
