PERTINAX, A.D. 193. AR Denarius (3.69 gms), Rome Mint, A.D. 193. NGC EF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 5/5.
RIC-1a. "IMP CAES P HELV PERTIN AVG" Laureate head of Pertinax facing right; Reverse: "AEQVIT AVG TR P COS II" Aequitas standing facing left, holding scales and cornucopiae. The first Augustus during the Year of the Five Emperors, Pertinax succeeded Commodus and immediately set about several reformative measures. One was a reform of the silver coinage, and as evidenced by this piece the quality and fineness greatly improved when compared to the final denarii of Commodus. Alas he also attempted to restore discipline to the Praetorian Guard, who chose violence as their response. Afterwards the Praetorians auctioned the imperial position to a wealthy senator named Didius Julianus who in turn was ousted some two months later by Septimius Severus. A wholesome and pleasing example from a turbulent period of Roman history. Good strike on a sound flan. Lightly toned and quite attractive.
