NICARAGUA. Leon. Real, (18)23-PM PY. NGC MS-62.
KM-8.1 (under Honduras). 3.55 grams. Pillar tops are "pine tree" style, lions and castles in quadrants. "PM" of obverse is clear, with partially visible "PY" on reverse. While Standard Catalog of World Coins attributes these "imitation cob" issues to Honduras, Jara (p.31-35) traces their origin to Leon, Nicaragua. Essentially tone free and well struck on a somewhat angular planchet. A fascinating type from the early tumultuous post-colonial period in the history of Central America. VERY RARE in this quality.
Ex: Richard Stuart Collection.
Estimate: $1000.00- $1500.00
