PERU. South Peru. 8 Escudos, 1838-MS. Cuzco Mint. NGC MS-61.
Fr-71; KM-171. Very attractive for this beloved issue, adorned in bright orange tone, with dazzling gleam in the fields and a bold sunface design on the obverse that pairs with an equally well-defined reverse motif. Close inspection confirms the outstanding quality, with no major marks that enter the surfaces and only a few superficial hairlines scattered here and there. RARE in this quality, and due to its iconic design, one of the most prized issues of Latin America. A great opportunity for the specialist or collector of highly demanded world gold types.

Peru was partitioned in 1836 after Bolivian dictator Andres Santa Cruz crushed an army rebellion against Peruvian president Luis Jose de Orbegosos, and created a new confederation. The new state consisted of North and South Peru, which were both then joined administratively to Bolivia. The union was short lived, and ended with the Battle of Yungay (January 20, 1839) only a year after this coin was struck, when Chile (aligned with dissident Peruvians) toppled the new state.

Estimate: $10000.00- $15000.00
