PHILIPPINES. Copper 2 Centavos Pattern, 1894. Alfonso XIII of Spain. PCGS SP-64 BN.
KM-Pn19; Basso-92; Cal-pg.844. According to famed Philippines numismatist Aldo P. Basso who authored Coins, Medals and Tokens of the Philippines, the provisional reopening of the Manila mint was authorized by royal decree on December 15, 1893; both silver subsidiary coins and copper Centavo and 2 Centavo pieces were needed. In preparation of this, a very limited number of copper patterns were struck, but no silver coins were apparently ever minted. Of the copper striking, very few have come to light, with the known population for each denomination being below 10 pieces. EXTREMELY RARE, this is among the nicer examples observed, with two of the five pieces we've traced showing significant forms of damage. This example, bordering on Gem quality, exhibits smooth fields with gorgeous blue, green, purple and magenta iridescent hues, while the protected areas retain glimmers of original red color. Worthy of significant attention from the specialist collector as the next opportunity to acquire an example this fine may not come for many years.
