PHILIPPINES. Japanese Occupation. Homma Medal Uniface Trial Strike, ca. 1942. VERY FINE.
53.0 mm x 54.0 mm; 74.15 gms. cf.Basso-150. By Clemente Zamora. VERY RARE. Important early die trial for the already scarce medals issued by General Masaharu Homma, commander of the Japanese 14th Area Army, who oversaw the Japanese conquest of the Philippines. This trial is struck on a nearly square piece of lead which has been machine smoothed on the side to which the trial was struck. The obverse die trial contains the date "1942" stamped below, however on this example the numerals are finer and done with different punches as well as being spaced more widely apart. In the northwest corner of the obverse is stamped a serial number "000105" which is done with punches differing from either of the other two date stamps. On the reverse we find an incised inscription: "Trial/ Lead Plate/ C. Zamora/ 8-4-42". The trial bears a slightly more bold strike with some details in the leggings and distant hilltops being more defined. Another remarkable item sure to become a cornerstone to a collection from the era.
Estimate: $2000.00- $3000.00
