POLAND. Danzig. Donation (Donatywa) Silver Medal, 1619. Sigismund III Waza (1587-1632). NGC AU Details--Tooled.
52.8 mm Hutten Czapski 1386, Gumowski 1911. By Samuel Ammon of Danzig. High, narrow circle wreath surrounds this Swedish-born King's armored bust r. wearing the Collar of the Golden Fleece, Latin titles King of Poland and Sweden, Duke of Prussia; Reverse Cherubs support City Arms over a detailed city panorama, "CIVITAS. GEDANENSIS. F:F: "above. Close study finds the tiny date at six O'clock in the section across the moat. Bright silver shows contrasting toning in the recesses of the complex design. The reason for this splendid medal's issue has not been ascertained with complete certainty. Swedish born and aggressively Catholic, Sigismund III fought to capture the Swedish throne throughout the first years of his reign in Poland. Between 1609-1618, he intervened with Polish forces into the chaos of neighboring Russia during that nation's Time of Troubles, hoping to make his son Wladyslaw the next Czar. The only result was vast expenditure and making it certain that Poland would remain as Russia's major enemy in the future. Russian medal cataloguer Reichel attempted to link this medal to "Peace with Russia," but nothing in the complex design affirms this assertion. The obverse is very similar to the famous 1621 Gold 100 Ducat by the same engraver marking the Polish victory over the Turks at Chocim. Silver cast and chased at time of issue, hence the "Tooled" label on the holder.

From the Collection of Dr. James Eustace Bizzell, II.

Estimate: $2000.00- $3000.00
