RUSSIA. Display Board of Colonel Pantuhoff's Order of St. George Cross, Shoulder Boards & Other Regalia.
The 37 mm St. George Cross (Werlich-1095; Vernon-26) is marked "56" standard fineness and is white enameled with a gold rim. A circular medallion at the center bears an image of St. George slaying the dragon in color enamels. The reverse of the medallion has the cipher of St. George in black on a white background. The orange and black watered silk ribbon is original and boasts bold colors. The obverse has some light surface abrasions to the enamel on the top arm of the cross, and the reverse has a 4 mm chip missing from the rim of the central medallion. The Shoulder Boards with a single red stripe are the ones worn by Pantuhoff when he was a captain in His Majesty's Own Company (of His Majesty's Battalion) in 1905. They measure 140 x 60 mm and have applied metallic ciphers of Czar Nicholas II, an Imperial crown and an Imperial eagle on the button. In addition, there are a pair of silver bullion stars above the crown and another pair to the right and left of the cipher. These have what appears to be insect damage around parts of the edge. The maker's label is still attached to the reverse of both. The less ornate pair of Shoulder Boards with the two stripes were worn by Pantuhoff when he was a Colonel of the Guard during WWI. At this time, he was the commander of the First Battalion of the First Rifle Regiment of the Guard. The 42 x 60 mm bronze oval Badge is a graduation badge of the Archaeological Institute in Petrograd which Pantuhoff attended after his army schooling. Imperial eagle between upper and lower wreaths of oak and laurel. The crown at the top is silvered. The final item on this board is an embossed brass Russian Imperial Cap Badge. The mounting pins on the reverse have been removed to facilitate mounting on the 250 x 360 mm maroon velvet-wrapped wooden display board. The Cap Badge has come loose from the display, but can be easily refixed. Attractive and RARE.
