Diego de Losado was a Spanish conquistador who is credited with founding modern day Caracas, formerly established as Santiago de Leon de Caracas on July 25, 1567. Situated in a valley, Spanish interests lay in the existence of gold veins situated within as well as the potential for uniting the Spanish colonies situated to the east and west. Today, Caracas is the capital city of Venezuela and is the country's most populous city with a population around 3,000,000.
