Fiji Oriental Hotel at Levuka Six Pence Pick Unlisted Fine. An early unlisted Fiji example. It was issued by the Oriental Hotel, Levuka, and hand signed by a gentleman named J.C. McCallum. The piece is undated, but our research has put McCallum as the hotelkeeper of the Oriental Hotel in 1874. McCallum was embroiled in an embezzlement scandal as chief clerk of Cakobau Treasury in 1872, where he was accused of printing notes at will, without backing. It is amusing that people were willing to accept any currency from Mr. McCallum signed "I O the bearer". We are not entirely sure what paper was used, but appears to be a kind of rice or bamboo paper. The choice of paper was most likely made to give it a longer life in the tropical weather in Fiji. The severe weather will also probably explain the crimping. An interesting lot with great historical content. From the Minot Collection HID08701242017
