HANOVER. George IV. 1820-1830. AR Medal (35mm, 30.03 g, 12h). Foundation of the Royal National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck. By W. Wyon. Dated 1824. ROYAL NATIONAL INSTITUTION FOR THE PRESERVATION OF LIFE FROM SHIPWRECK/ GEORGE THE FOURTH PATRON, bare head left; 1824 below / LET NOT THE DEEP SWALLOW ME UP, three men in lifeboat right, two rowing, one pulling a fourth from the water. Eimer 1174; BHM 1246. VF, toned, numerous marks, clasp removed. Rare in silver.

The artist, W. Wyon, has placed himself in the scene as the man in the boat, pulling a survivor from the water. This medal was awarded in gold and silver to individuals who performed acts of heroism in rescuing shipwrecked sailors along the coast of England.
