(x) Mercia, Coenwulf (796-821), Penny, 1.24g, 9h, large portrait type, c.800-821, East Anglian mint (Ipswich?), Wihtred, + coehvvlf rex m, lozenge shaped o, the r a sideways s shape, simplistic diademed head right, the faint truncation breaking the solid inner circle but with no attempt at a bust, rev. + pihtced, the h elongated, around beaded inner circle containing cross with pellets in angles (Naismith E12.1c this coin; N.367; S.920), good very fine.
A coin of considerable charm. The large staring eye is in reality a central circle with a pellet in the centre, around which the head is sketched, while the lower part of the face fades with impressionistic realism. The letters are also very individual, in particular the very elongated h. The moneyer Wihtred clearly was not too concerned about his letter R. On the obverse he has curved the letter so much it has become a backward S on its side, while on the reverse he seems to have simply used a clear rounded C.
