(x) Stephen (1135-54), Penny, 1.41g, Voided Cross and Mullets type, London, Tierri D, + stiefne, crowned bust three-quarters left, holding sceptre in right hand, rev. tie[rri]d: on: lvn, plain cross voided with a mullet in each angle (Mack 61f ; N.878; S.1280), reverse a little off-centre, very fine, very rare.
Provenance:
Spink Numismatic Circular, 13 February 1992, no.148

A rare instance of the moneyer signing with an additional letter, presumably the initial of his surname, a practice that only becomes widespread under the Angevins. For a Cross and Piles Penny of Tierri D see lot 701.
The other rare example of this in the reign of Stephen is the moneyer Robert A at Thetford (see lot 686)
Estimate: £400 - £500
