(x) Stephen (1135-54), Penny, 1.02g, Cross Pommée (Awbridge) type, Bedford, Iohan, crowned and bearded bust three-quarters left, holding sceptre in right hand, rev. + ioh[a]n[: on: b]ede, voided cross within beaded quatrefoil, a fleur in each angle springing from the quatrefoil (Mack 100 but the moneyer not listed; N.881; S.1282), obverse not struck up and about fine, reverse better and very fine although weak in parts, a great rarity, only the second known of this type for the mint.
Provenance:
Patrick Finn list 12, Spring 1998, no. 82, £1,250

Patrick highlighted this coin in the introduction to his list, and included the following note.
'The best collection of coins of the Bedford mint was owned by Nicholas T Bagshawe; it consisted of 66 pieces which he inherited from his father. The coins were catalogued privtely for him by Mr Elmore Jones, and were sold on commission by Spink in 1970. Some were sold to prominent collectors, and I can recall that 9 or 10 pieces were sold to the Bedford Museum. One piece that was sold to Elmore Jones was a type 7 by the moneyer tomas and that coin realised £1,600 whan Elmore's collection was sold in 1983 (13 April lot 1103). The residue of 46 pieces were offered through SNC in December 1971.
Interestingly Bagshawe had only three coins of the Bedford mint from the reign of Stephen, two were of type 6 and one of type 7. It is worth noting that there are no Bedford coins from the reign of Stephen listed in the SCBI volumes, and type VII is not represented in the BM collection for Bedford.'
Estimate: £1,000 - £1,200
