Whilst Gallienus was in the east dealing with the revolt of Macrianus, barbarians invaded the western empire taking Britannia, Spain and Gaul. Following the recapture of these provinces for Gallienus by Postumus, a victory this type was struck to celebrate, Postumus himself revolted and declared himself emperor of the region now known as the 'Gallic Empire'.
