Claudius II Gothicus BI Mule Antoninianus. Rome, AD 268-270. IMP C CLAVDIVS [AVG], radiate and cuirassed bust right / [DIANAE] CONS AVG, stag walking left; [XII]? in exergue. For obverse type, cf. RIC 13 (Claudius Gothicus), for reverse type, cf. RIC 179 (Gallienus). 2.55g, 19mm, 12h.
Very Fine.
The reverse type is part of the last emission of the coins of Gallienus from Rome which featured animals and legends appealing to the Roman gods and goddesses, in this case "Diana Conservatrix" (Diana the Preserver), to protect the emperor and the empire. It is here paired with an obverse of Claudius II.
