Davidson, BNJ XXVI. notes that all the minor variations on David II second coinage probably served the same purpose as privy marks on the coinage of Edward III. David was a prisoner of the English for eleven years. He was influenced by his stay in England and by the pressure of the English for good quality coinage in the ransom paid for his release.
