UNITED STATES. George Washington. 1732-1799. Bronze. The Manly Medal. 36.75 gm. 47.2 mm. 1790. His bust in military uniform left; BROOKS (the engraver) in small letters on the truncation; GEO WASHINGTON BORN VIRGINIA around; Feb. 11 | 1732 below / GENERAL OF THE AMERICAN ARMIES 1775 RESIGNED 1783 PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES 1789 in ten lines of lettering in various sizes; MANLY & C 1790 around in small letters at the bottom. Musante GW 10. Baker 61B. Fine to Very Fine obverse; faint reverse. (The problems with the striking of this high relief piece suggest that the overall appearance, particularly of the legends, is a result of an inadequate strike rather than actual wear.)

Uncertain auction tag marked "Rarity-5" and "Lot 233."

The medal was made from a planchet that was cast and then overstruck with the dies. Manly had published an engraving based on the Christian Gullager portrait done in 1789 that Manly viewed in Boston. Musante provides substantial background on this "first medallic commemoration of Washington to be issued in America."
