SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny. 485-466 B.C. AR tetradrachm. 16.78 gm. 25 mm. Struck under Hieron I, circa 475-470 B.C. Charioteer driving slow quadriga right, holding kentron and reins; above, Nike flying right, crowning horses / Diademed head of Arethusa right; four dolphins and ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΟΝ around. Boehringer Series XIIb (V153/R242). SNG ANS 103 (same obverse die). SNG Lloyd 1297 (same reverse die). Extremely Fine; lustrous old toning; uncommonly well centered and well struck on a large flan. Lovely archaic style.
