MESOPOTAMIA, Edessa. Caracalla. AD 198-217. AR Tetradrachm (2626mm, 13.78 g, 12h). Struck AD 215-217. AVT K M AV ANTΩNЄINOC CЄB, radiate and cuirassed bust right / ΔHMAPX ЄΞ VΠATOC TO Δ, eagle standing facing, head right, with wings spread; shrine with pediment between legs. Prieur 851 (this coin illustrated); Bellinger 139 var. (eagle with wreath in beak); C. van Hoof, "Syrische Tetradrachmenprägung der römischen Kaiserzeit: Ein neuer Schatzfund," JNG XXXVI (1986), p. 121, 107 (this coin, illustrated on pl. 15). Near EF, toned, minor metal flaws on obverse. Very rare variety without the typical wreath in eagle's beak, presumably an engraver's error.
