Hiberno-Norse Vikings and the Danelaw Cast AR Ingot. Circa AD 800-1000. Sub-rectangular in plan and ovate in section, and tapering to a rounded point at each end, the 'upper' sides are almost smooth while the underside displays numerous cast marks and striations. Features two deep, nearly parallel cuts to the top which divide the ingot into thirds. Parallels for such ingots can be found in the Cuerdale Viking silver hoard from Lancashire which includes similar long, narrow examples and was deposited circa 905-910 (J. Graham-Campbell, 2011, The Cuerdale Hoard and related Viking-Age silver and gold from Britain and Ireland in the British Museum, London, pl. 3, 1: 17-18). 34.81g, 75mm x 10mm x 8mm.
Condition as seen. Rare found as a complete ingot, often seen as hacksilver (which may explain the cuts on the present piece).
From a private UK collection.
