Anastasius I. 491-518. AE nummus (8.7 mm, .71 g, 2 h). Nicomedia or Antioch mint, Struck A.D. 491-498. no legible legend, diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Anastasius right / Monogram of Anastasius within wreath. SBCV 31, 46. VF for type, crude, but bold.

Ex Leo Hamburger 1890's.

There is a bit of ambiguity inherant in cataloging Anastasius pre-reform types. RIC X does not include him at all. SBCV does, and attributes his coins, without mint marks, to Nicomedia and Antioch, but not Constantinople. LRBC lists him, but only for Constantinople, SRCV ends with Romulus Augustus. All his nummi are so crude as to be difficult to distinguish from so-called barbarous issuesThis coin comes from a large group of Roman Provincial, Byzantine and Vandalic coins which were part of Leopold Hamburger's inventory.
