Byzantine Weights, Circa 5th-7th century. Weight of 3 Nomismata (Bronze, 18x18 mm, 13.28 g), a uniface square coin weight with double-grooved edges. Ṅ Γ with cross above; all within stylized rectangular laurel wreath; all designs engraved in outline; the letters and the cross inlaid with silver. Rev. Plain. Bendall -. MAH -. Pera -. An attractive piece with beautiful earthen highlights. The inlays missing, otherwise, very fine.
What makes this piece especially interesting is the very unusual rectangular laurel wreath, which is reminiscent of the rendering of the lower part of the arch on lot 1599 below. The style and fabric of those two weights is so similar that they were most likely produced in the same workshop.
