KYRENAICA. Kyrene (?). Circa 4th-3rd century BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 8 mm, 0.46 g, 2 h). Facing female head. Rev. Elephant walking right. BMC -. SNG Copenhagen -. Extremely rare and perhaps unpublished. Somewhat rough, otherwise, good fine.
Style and fabric of this enigmatic issue are vaguely reminiscent of a hemiobol in Paris, formerly in the Seyrig Collection and later attributed by Houghton and Lorbeer to an uncertain Seleukid mint (HGC 9, 457 = SC 1293), but the style and fabric of our piece are clearly different and much more in line with the coinage of the Greek cities in the Kyrenaika.
