TROAS. Alexandria Troas. Gordian III, 238-244. 'As' (Orichalcum, 19 mm, 3.52 g, 6 h). AVT•M•ANT•GORDIANVS Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian III to right, seen from behind. Rev. COL AVG TROAD Cult statue of Apollo Smintheos to right, holding patera in his right hand and bow and arrow in his left and with quiver over shoulder. Bellinger A388. RPC VII.1 2.2. Patina stripped, otherwise, very fine.
This emission comes in two varieties, once with the correct IMP M ANT GORDIANVS (RPC VII.1 2.1) and once, as here, with AVT M ANT GORDIANVS (RPC VII.1 2.2) - an error which was certainly made by a Greek die cutter, who used the Greek word αὐτοκράτωρ for the Latin imperator.
