INDIA. Mysore. Woderyar Dynasty. Fanam, ND. Kanthirava Narasaraja I, 12th Maharaja of Mysore (1638-62). NGC MS-63.
Fr-1338. Vishnu seated facing; Reverse: Sri Kamthirava. As with the previous Maharajas before him, Kanthirava Narasaraja I continued to expand his territories laying claim to Satyamangalam in the south, Piriyapatna in the wast, Hosur in the north. He was called to defend against invasion from the Adil Shahis of Bijapur who suffered heavy losses. He was the first Wodeyar of Mysore to create symbols associated with royalty, established mints, and issued coins named "Kanthiray" after him which remained in circulation as part of Mysore's "current national money" for more than a century. Handsome and well centered with a small planchet crack.
