INDIA. Vijayanagar. Tuluva Dynasty. 1/2 Pagoda, ND. Achyuta Deva Raya (Posthumous) (1529-42). NGC MS-64.
Fr-361; Vijayanagar-10.11; MNI-908. RARE in this state of preservation and far superior than normally encountered. Two-headed flying eagle. Well struck and lustrous with good definition of the details. A lovely example with good eye appeal. The reign of Achyuta Deva Raya was not an easy one. Hand selected by his older brother, Krishna Deva Raya as an able successor, he had to contend for the throne with the powerful Aliya Rama Raya. The Portuguese traveler, Fernao Nuniz, portrayed him as cruel and entertained himself with vices. This simply was not the case as he had to fight hard to keep the waning peace and prosperity of his fathers reign. After much turmoil Aliya Rama Raya imprisoned him around 1540 in a coup. He died in 1542 and his son, Venkata I, succeeded him only to be deposed six months later and Sadasiva Raya became king with Apliya Rama Raya's regent.

Estimate: $200.00- $300.00
