MEXICO. 2 Reales, 1837/4-Do RM/RL. Durango Mint. NGC-30.
KM-374.4. A crudely executed overdate, possibly with a 5 included in the sequence of repunching, and also a RM/RL overassayer (not listed on holder). The Standard Catalog of World Coins does not list this date, and it's likely that it has been confused with the 1835/4, as indeed other examples of this die pair have been holdered as 1835/4. Busse also does not list this date, but states that the 1835/4 is sometimes attributed as 1837/4. The RM/RL assayer makes sense if these dies were left over from the 1820's. Richly toned and boldly defined for the grade, the obverse on this piece is particularly sharp with slightly weakness appearing in the eagle's breast. A fascinating and EXTREMELY RARE study piece.
