The term grivna refers to silver ingots cast for circulation in Rus' from around the end of the eleventh century. By the twelfth century, there were two known types of such ingots, the Kievan and Novgorodian (see next lot), both different in size and weight. The hexagonal Kievan ingot had an average weight of 162 grams, while the oblong Novgorodian ingot had an average weight of 196.2 grams. Each type is named on the basis of common find spots; the Kievan grivnas have been commonly found in Kiev or in other southwestern areas, while Novgorodian grivnas are commonly found in northeastern areas. Despite this, find spots confirm that northeastern and southwestern monetary systems were not isolated. The manufacture of the Kievan grivnas ceased when Kiev was destroyed by hoards of Mongols in AD 1240 and the Novgorod type became the primary monetary unit for the whole of Rus' until the end of the thirteenth century.
