Edward VII, Coronation 1902, matt proof gold five-pounds, bare head r., by de Saulles, rev. Pistrucci's St. George and dragon (S.3965; KM 807; Fr. 398a), 8,066 specimens struck, certified and graded by PCGS as Proof 64, rare in this grade
Of 9 coins graded by PCGS only 1 is higher. Most seen have been dipped or cleaned; very faint hairlines are seen on almost all original coins, as the mint workers, unused to the matt appearance, tended to wipe freshly minted coins on their leather aprons, which produced the faint hairlining. This is an exceptional matt proof.
