Edward VII, Coronation 1902, matt proof or possibly pattern, gold two-pounds, bare head r., by de Saulles, rev. Pistrucci's St. George and dragon (Wilson-Rasmussen 405, R7), "struck with incomplete matt surface which is more grainy than the regular issue", excessively rare and perhaps only 2 or 3 specimens this surface; certified and graded by PCGS Specimen 64, a beautiful coin with lovely gold colour
*ex. Goldberg Auction 25, 31 May 2004, Lot 1343.
This is an extremely rare coin, doubtless because its subtly different surface texture went unnoticed for nearly a century. The Wilson-Rasmussen listing notes a clear difference in the matt surface between this coin and the regular proof, though the "0" in the date appears more like the regular currency coin. The PCGS grading history does not differentiate the coin's variety, but of 22 matt proof coins graded only 2 were higher.
