Scottish Coins, The Macdonald Collection, Charles II, first coinage, four merks, 1665, type II, laur. and dr. bust r., F below, rev. crowned cruciform shields, crowned interlinked Cs in angles, value in centre (S.5605; Murray 2), almost fine, of the highest rarity
Purchased Numismatic Legends, 27th July 1991.
The 1665 four merks was not represented in the Harington E. Manville, J. K. R. Murray, Bridgewater, Dundee or R. W. Cochran-Patrick collections. An example from the same dies was sold in the R. C. Lockett collection (430). The Coinage of Scotland (Edward Burns) does not list 1665, but states 'Cardonnel mentions 1665 as one of the dates of the four-merk piece, and there is one in the Pollexfen collection.'
