Holroyd, by Benjamin Wyon, bust of Queen Victoria to left, her hair tied back with roses, rev. tomb of William of Wykeham at Winchester, inscribed on the edge to EDWARDUS D. HOLROYD. COMMENSALIS. MDCCCXLV. & MDCCCXLVI, 49mm., 57.08 & 58.37gms. (cf. BHM.1560; Eimer 1240), in fitted case by H. Newman & Sons, Melbourne, minor handling marks and scuff to obverse of second, good extremely fine (2)
Sir Edward Dundas Holroyd (1828-1916), educated at Winchester College and judge, was born on 25 January 1828 in Surrey, England, the second son of Edward Holroyd, a commissioner of the London Bankruptcy Court, and his wife Caroline, Trinity College, Cambridge (B.A., 1851; M.A., 1854). He entered Gray's Inn in November 1851 and was called to the Bar on 6 June 1855. Holroyd emigrated to Australia and was admitted to the Victorian Bar in 1859 and the Tasmanian Bar in 1867. He was to play an important part in the constitution of the Supreme Court and in the preparation of Victoria's Judicature Act. He was knighted in 1903 before retiring in 1906.
